Mark has thrown his support behind the Anthony Nolan charity's campaign to recruit more stem cell donors across the UK.
The charity's aim is to save and improve the lives of everyone affected by blood cancer and blood disorders. To help raise awareness, it held an event called 'Communities vs Blood Cancer' in Parliament on Wednesday 26 October.
Attendees were able to hear first-hand from someone who has received a life-changing stem cell transplant, and experience what it is like to sign up to the stem cell register via a simple cheek swab.
According to Anthony Nolan, every year in the UK, around 2,000 blood cancer patients need a stem cell donor to save their life – but too often a donor isn’t available or can’t be found quickly enough. People from minority ethnic backgrounds currently have significantly less chance of finding a lifesaving stem cell match from an unrelated donor.
Commenting, Mark said:
"On behalf of my constituents who are living with blood cancer or a blood disorder, I am delighted to support Anthony Nolan's work to recruit more stem cell donors. The more donors we have, the more lives we can save."
